Sir William Smythe: The true "home" of football (in Brazil!). So wonderful to see the plaque! We as a community played a key role in the early development of football in Brazil and Bangu is a prime example of that influence. In the late 19th century, British workers arrived in Bangu to work at the Fábrica Bangu, a textile factory founded in 1889. Along with their industrial skills, they brought their passion for football, a sport that was still virtually unknown in Brazil at the time. These English expatriates organized casual matches among themselves and soon introduced the game to local Brazilian workers. In 1904, this cultural exchange led to the founding of Bangu Atlético Clube, one of Brazil’s earliest football clubs. It was the first team in Rio de Janeiro to include factory workers and people of diverse backgrounds, breaking social barriers that were common in the sport at the time. Our influence was evident not only in the club’s organization and uniforms but also in its sporting spirit and discipline. Over the years, Bangu became a symbol of working-class pride and community unity. Today, while football in Brazil has evolved far beyond its origins, Bangu remains an important landmark — a reminder of how English traditions helped shape this nation’s favorite sport. Hurrah! 🇬🇧

eric karukin: Bangu shopping is one of the coolest malls anywhere in the world, I remember when it was being converted from a factory and to visit it as a tourist from the USA 🇺🇸 its just a fascinating place with excellent shops and restaurants...highly recommend a visit

Decuypere Walter: For Brasil, this is still rather unusual? The reconversion of an old factory into a modern shopping zone. Great way of preserving the past! Shopping Nova América is a similar project in Rio de Janeiro.
