Selina O: Today I witnessed something with my own eyes that deeply shocked me, and I feel you should know about it. Projecto Tamar presents itself as one of the largest NGOs dedicated to protecting sea turtles. On their website, they claim that turtles are kept only temporarily for rehabilitation and care. However, when we visited one of their facilities today, the staff proudly told us that all the turtles there spend their entire lives in captivity. According to them, the turtles are kept to attract attention to the organization and to donate blood for other turtles. Across each of their locations (23 in total), they keep an estimated 10–15 sea turtles in small saltwater pools. The sight was absolutely heartbreaking and brought me to tears. Some of the turtles are kept completely isolated. The fact that this organization actively collects donations under the banner of turtle protection while permanently confining these animals in such conditions is truly unbelievable and deeply disturbing. No one should support this horrible organization willing to sacrifice these poor animals for advertising and entertainment.
AJ M: Interesting attraction to visit when the wheather is not nice enough for the beach. There are a few ponds with specimens + explanations given by volunteers of the foundation, whose purpose is the preservation of turtles and education of local communities for responsible fishing techniques (not sure about their level of English). I do not recommended visiting with heavy rains, as most of the visit is open air. Expect to spend there 30 minutes to 1 hour and a half, depending on your pace. Good for kids.
M. Madden: As an American, who has come to Ubatuba all my life, this place secures a special place in my heart. It has an amazing mission and allows for education into something that the US severely lacks especially when it comes to environmentalism and sustainability of the natural world.
Jason and Camila Lucero: One of our favorite places to spend a couple of hours seeing a large variety of turtles. The project is on a mission to protect turtles, educate on keeping our oceans clean, and they have been working on this mission for over 35 years. We highly recommend visiting if you are in the Ubatuba area.
Annike Stella: Very nice with many types of turtles. Can be seen in under an hour if you don’t have children with.
